The Victron Skylla-TG GMDSS is a 24Vdc battery charger and power supply built for Global Maritime Distress & Safety System (GMDSS) installations. A standard charger needs additional equipment to carry out the monitoring and alarm functions GMDSS requires. The GMDSS version provides that data itself, so a single unit charges the battery, powers the GMDSS equipment and supplies the monitoring and alarm information the system needs.

Both the battery and the GMDSS equipment connect directly to the charger, with the GMDSS positive taken directly from the battery. A standard eight-wire UTP cable links the charger to the VE.Net GMDSS panel, which displays DC voltage, battery amps, consumed amp-hours and time to go, along with DC high/low voltage and charger failure alarms.

The system is click and go. Panels come pre-programmed for GMDSS functionality, alarm settings are pre-set, and a simple menu allows changes if required. A built-in battery controller fully monitors battery capacity, so the panel can show the remaining time to go during a power supply blackout.

The Skylla-TG GMDSS suits vessels that need a monitored battery supply behind their distress and safety communications equipment. It meets IEC 60945 for maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment, and its charge voltage can be precisely adjusted to suit VRLA or flooded battery systems.

The series covers two models, the 24/30 GMDSS and 24/50 GMDSS, so charge current can be matched to the battery bank. The VE.Net GMDSS panel and UTP cable are ordered separately, and Powerbox Australia provides local engineering support for model selection.

FAQs
A standard Skylla-TG charger needs additional equipment to perform the monitoring and alarm functions GMDSS applications require. The Skylla-TG GMDSS provides all required monitoring and alarm data itself, but it must still be paired with a VE.Net GMDSS panel and an eight-wire UTP cable connecting the charger to the panel, both ordered separately.
Both are 24Vdc units with identical input voltage range, charge voltages, protection and physical dimensions. They differ only in charge current: the 24/30 GMDSS delivers 30A (limited to 22A at 110Vac), and the 24/50 GMDSS delivers 50A. Choose based on your battery bank size and required charge time.
The VE.Net GMDSS panel displays DC voltage, battery amps, time to go, amp-hours, and alarms for DC high/low voltage and charger failure. Its menu also includes low SOC, low current and high current alarm settings, alongside setup screens for the controller, battery capacity and charge parameters.
It suits VRLA and flooded battery systems. Charge voltage can be precisely adjusted to match the battery, using an IUoUo three-step characteristic with absorption at 28.5Vdc and float at 26.5Vdc.
It includes output short circuit protection, battery reverse polarity detection, high battery voltage protection and over-temperature protection.
It meets EN 60335-1 and EN 60335-2-29 for safety, EN 55014-1, EN 55014-2, EN 61000-3-2 and EN 61000-3-3 for electromagnetic compatibility, and IEC 60945 for maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment.
