The Dunkermotoren AE38 is a battery-free absolute encoder that reports true shaft position the instant the drive powers up — with no homing move or reference run before the axis can be trusted.

It integrates inside the motor’s own profile housing rather than bolting on as a separate unit, without an extra enclosure, and feeds position straight to the internal Dunkermotoren controller. Its multiturn count is held by Energy Harvesting — power drawn from shaft rotation — so there is no backup battery to monitor or replace.

The same encoder suits Dunkermotoren’s BG brushless DC motor range, with overall length varying by motor frame, so a drive can be specified with absolute feedback built in from the outset rather than added later.

It fits positioning and motion-control tasks where the axis must come up already referenced — automated machinery, handling and actuation duties that can’t afford a homing cycle at every power-up.

Dunkermotoren AE38 absolute encoder with black profile housing, flange mount and M12 connector
Features
  • Absolute feedback means the drive knows true shaft position the instant it powers up — no homing move at start-up
  • Energy Harvesting powers the multiturn counter from shaft rotation, so there is no battery to monitor, replace or schedule downtime for
  • 16 Bit singleturn (65,536 counts) resolves very fine shaft movement for high-accuracy positioning duties
  • 16 Bit multiturn tracks over 65,000 revolutions, so long travels stay absolutely referenced without an external counter
  • Separate 12 Bit commutation output feeds the drive what it needs for motor control while positioning runs at full resolution
  • SSI output goes straight into the internal Dunkermotoren controller, keeping feedback wiring inside the motor

FAQs
The AE38 reports true shaft position the instant the drive powers up, so the axis is referenced immediately — there is no homing move or reference run at start-up, unlike an incremental encoder that only counts change from power-on.
It uses Dunkermotoren's Energy Harvesting technology, drawing power from shaft rotation to keep the multiturn counter running, so there is no backup battery to monitor, replace or schedule downtime for.
The AE38 provides 16 Bit (65,536 cpr) singleturn resolution for positioning plus a separate 12 Bit (4,096 cpr) singleturn output for commutation, with 16 Bit multiturn resolution tracking over 65,000 revolutions.
The AE38 integrates with the Dunkermotoren BG 45, BG 66, BG 75 and BG 95 brushless DC motor series; overall length depends on the frame — 60 mm on BG 45, 65 mm on BG 66 and BG 95, and 69 mm on BG 75.
The AE38 outputs over SSI directly to the internal Dunkermotoren motor controller, keeping the feedback wiring inside the motor rather than running to an external interface.
The AE38 is integrated within the motor's profile housing, so it's protected without a separate enclosure or added external length.
The AE38 offers a positional accuracy of ±0.0878° (within 12 Bit), suitable for high-accuracy positioning and commutation in closed-loop motor control.
The AE38 is the integrated absolute-feedback option on the compatible BG motor frames. For selection help or to confirm the right configuration for your Australian or New Zealand installation, contact Powerbox at sales@powerbox.com.au.
